How to Keep a Room Bright After Summer Ends

Aug 10, 2017 -- Posted by : admin

Summer is the season of sunshine. When summer ends, though, and fall and winter roll around, rooms that were once bright and cheery can seem poorly lit and shadowy. To help keep your entire house as bright as it is during the dog days of summer all year round, here are a few tips for brightening up a room after summer ends.

Add Some White

White is a bright color, so naturally adding some elements of white to your room will help brighten it up even when less sunshine is coming through. Since white doesn't absorb any light, it will scatter the light that is in the room, making it brighter. Start by painting your walls white, and from there you may also want to add some other white elements such as white furniture, curtains, and decorations.

Get Creative with Lighting

The summer sunlight is excellent for brightening up a room, but artificial lighting can work just as well. Lamps near the wall with shades that aim light upward and downward are a good way to brighten up a room, as are ceiling lights that are placed close to the wall.

Bulky cabinetry can create a gloomy shadowing effect, but this can be nicely negated by adding under-cabinet lighting, which can be accomplished using LED light strips that will create a nice glow around the edges of your cabinetry.

If you have a favorite piece of art hanging on your wall, feature it with a picture light, and if you are hanging lights from the ceiling, consider putting in lights that hang down a little lower in order to better scatter light throughout the room.

Add a Touch of Black

Adding black to brighten up a room may seem counterintuitive, but the truth is that adding just a few black elements creates contrast that will really bring out the brightness of a room. Look for thin, linear elements of black, and remember that a little bit goes a long way.
