If you've just moved into a new home, are remodeling your existing home or are in the process of building your dream home, you likely need some interior design help to make your home a stylish, yet comfortable, reflection of your personal taste. However, if you're like most families, you're concerned about your household's carbon footprint, and you don't want to decorate your home at the expense of the planet. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to minimize your decorating's effect on the environment while still creating a beautiful home.

Easy Ways to Make Your Decorating Eco-Friendly

1. Scour the resale shops. Buying gently-used furnishings and home accessories not only keeps such items from entering America's growing number of landfills, but it also saves the resources and energy needed to produce a new product. Plus, previously owned items have a history and can add charm and character to your rooms. Are you good at crafts and woodworking? Consider giving older items that need a little love a new life with a fresh coat of paint, new hardware and/or new moldings.

2. Opt for eco-friendly flooring options in lieu of carpet. Carpet has one of the shortest lifespans of any flooring option and will need to be replaced in three to five years. In addition, carpeting requires petrochemicals to produce and can release toxins into your home. Better to pick an eco-friendly flooring like bamboo, reclaimed wood or cork.

3. Decorate with houseplants. Live plants that are easy to maintain, such as philodendrons, ferns and rubber plants, add warmth and charm to your living space while also improving the quality of your indoor air. Plants "drink" in the carbon dioxide released into the air when we breathe and replace it with oxygen.

4. Choose VOC paint. It used to cost a small fortune to buy environmentally friendly paint, and you had a very limited palette of colors. All of that has changed. Today's VOC paint has minimal fumes and minimal toxins, AND it lasts just as long (or longer) than traditional paint. Some brands offer a 25-year warranty. You'll likely get tired of the color before your paint finish starts looking dull.

You don't have to choose between style and being environmentally responsible. To learn more about adding "green" elements to your decorating scheme and other Frisco interior design services, contact us today to schedule an appointment.
